The entrance to the Mt. Whitney Zone begins
at the trailhead in the John Muir wilderness.

You may have heard that the highest point in the lower 48 states is Mount
Whitney in southern California but have you ever thought of actually
climbing it? Well.... two Butte County women have recently done just that.
One.... Sandy Becker, has actually climbed it 27 times. A remarkable feat
at any age, let alone for someone 69 years of age.

Pike County Lookout near challenge.
Although Butte County fire officials don't seem to be able to afford Fire
Lookout Towers, The United States Forest Service doesn't have that
problem. The Tower at Pike County Lookout near Challenge is staffed from
May until the rains come.
