A view looking southwest from hwy 162. A stormy sky shadows the afterbay with the Sutter Buttes visible in the background. Oroville Lake and the accompanying forebays and afterbay are part of the state water system and are a favorite of local fisherman. Butte County is a sportsman's paradise with an abundance of waterways suitable for whatever type of water activities you enjoy. We also have numerous trails and camping areas as well as thousands of acres where hunting is allowed. Butte County is the home of Feather Falls which at 640 feet is the sixth highest waterfall in the continental United States.Another of Butte County's natural wonders is the Bald Rock Dome, part of a granite pluton formed millions of years ago. Bald rock dome is a favorite of well prepared rock climbers. The spectacular nature of the Feather Falls Scenic area, of which Bald Rock Dome is a part, cannot be adequately expressed in mere pictures. It needs to be enjoyed first hand to fully appreciated. Another favorite outdoor area is Bidwell Park in the east Chico area. With it's many trails, swimming holes, and sheer rock cliffs it is a popular year around destination. Bidwell Park also has the distinction of being the location for the 1938 filming of The Adventures of Robin Hood starring screen idol Errol Flynn as Robin Hood and Olivia de Havilland as Maid Marian. This is a behind the scenes picture taken in the park. Photo courtesy of JHG.
